For quick input of notes (and other objects) LilyPondTool provides a virtual piano keyboard. You can open the piano from >>. This is also a dockable window, so you can dock it to the sides.
To turn on the piano, click on the keyboard with the mouse or click on the button in the piano tool panel. The caret turns into a triangle, showing the input position and the keyboard gets enabled.
